Church of Futbol

My friend Dave invited me out to a Chicago Fire match yesterday, courtesy of our buddy Scott who works for the team. It was my first Fire game at Toyota Park, and we got there a bit late because of traffic. I couldn’t help but be reminded of the Rose Bowl in Pasadena when I saw the park; it’s a very nice little stadium surrounded by parking, in the middle of nowhere. I brought along my 1D and 50mm. I didn’t try very hard to look for moments but shot what I thought was interesting.

Our seats were great, and the game was fun to watch, and we walked freely around the stadium. The Fire lost 1-0. Oh, and I really, really miss shooting sports.

Helmet Head

Wowie wow wow wow, a drawing! I haven’t used my wacom tablet in over a month so I dusted it off last night before going to bed. I made a few pencil sketches, scanned, and colored in photoshop. Lines coulda been cleaner with some Pen Tool / Illustrator love, but I felt like coloring by hand. As they say, I just put pressure-sensitve stylus to electromagnetically inductive drawing area and did some work. The model was one of my friend Angela G. Pestano‘s blog followers, Helmet Head, based on a photo she put up. I love the pose, the fashionista-ness, and the name!

Style I was going for was a simpler, curvier Dyna Moe for the graphic, Angela for the hand-written type. ;]

Gameday with the Marching Illini [updated]

Last fall I spent a few weekends shooting a photoessay about the Marching Illini for the University of Illinois Alumni Association. I had a great time following the band around during games (and a few practices) and spent a lot of time shooting and editing. I waited until the story was published in the UIAA Quarterly magazine this month to post about it, and I really hope you enjoy this audio-slideshow I made with some of my photos! Thanks UIAA for the amazing opportunity.

Warning: You might need to turn down your volume, unless you’re full of school spirit and are interested in blasting The Marching Illini rendition of the “Three-in-One.”

9/13/2010 :: UPDATE ::

My editor at the Alumni Association was nice enough to send a few copies of the photo essay! They arrived in the mail over the weekend. I was a little disappointed to see some of a few of my favorite shots from the project not included but I really loved the ones Stephanie chose and how the pages were laid out. I am glad it turned out so wonderful.

O Sleep, The Certain Knot of Peace

Here’s my sister and my neices during their nap, I really liked the lighting. It’s too bad I didn’t have a tripod, it might have looked better with less ISO noise.

Sorry for the lack of updates lately, been busy with stuff and haven’t had any time to shoot anything. I bought a couple rolls of Ilford Delta 400 for a portraits project I am slowly starting up, should hopefully be fulfilling and I’ll get some nice portraits to play around with.
