Illini Basketball + Girl Talk

It’s 2:30am and I’m bored so I whipped up a sweet indie-hip/hop-DJ-mashup slideshow of my photos from the basketball game against Presby College that I shot with Ned on Saturday. We didn’t have any on-air audio for an audio slideshow so I told Ned to just use techno music instead. He didn’t, so this is an idea of what I think should have made the DI website on Sunday morning. :-P The musical cues don’t work the whole time, and I sort of ran out of photos, but it’s fun and stupid so who cares…

Orange & Blue Scrimm

Last weekend I shot a basketball scrimmage, and it was relatively uneventful. The worst part was captioning since the Illini wear practice jerseys without numbers on the front, and the numbers on the back are almost indecipherable. The worst part was getting to know the freshmen, but I hear that they’re supposed to be a good recruiting class so it’s good to get to know their names and faces now so that I can know who to cheer for in a few years once I’m gone and they make the NCAA championship game again.

Last Illini Basketball Game at Home

Illinois Fighting Illini vs. Michigan State Spartans – Sunday, March 1st, 2009

I’m trying out linking to an off-site bananalbum gallery for posts with superfluous amounts of photos (Thumbnail galleries are too much work to thumb through). Click on either image below for a full gallery of basketball.

Normally when I shoot, I always keep in mind what’s going on in the environment of my subjects. But usually when I shoot big time sports, I forget that things in the periphery (ie – fans, referees,  other players roaming the court, etc) can be distracting, extra information that is a little less important amidst all of the action. Hence, I’m usually sort of loose when I crop. This time, however, I tried to crop with more focus — that is, super tight — with this batch of photos I just processed. Hopefully it’s better.

PS.  I still suck at basketball, imo. Getting better, though. I need to see things vertically and have better instincts for timing, I think. I just need more practice and maybe try insanely cool experimental stuff like Brad Meyer, who’s always mounting remote cameras or using tilt-shift lenses.
