My friend Yoo Soo invited me out to an open mic night that he was going to perform at. The first act was a middle aged man who said he was in town from Texas, and boy howdy he was awesome! Very folksy blues, great sounding guitar to go with very caricatured Texan vocals.

Yoo Soo and Tim performed as well, but I didn’t get any photos of them on stage.

Last fall I spent a few weekends shooting a photoessay about the Marching Illini for the University of Illinois Alumni Association. I had a great time following the band around during games (and a few practices) and spent a lot of time shooting and editing. I waited until the story was published in the UIAA Quarterly magazine this month to post about it, and I really hope you enjoy this audio-slideshow I made with some of my photos! Thanks UIAA for the amazing opportunity.
Warning: You might need to turn down your volume, unless you’re full of school spirit and are interested in blasting The Marching Illini rendition of the “Three-in-One.”
9/13/2010 :: UPDATE ::
My editor at the Alumni Association was nice enough to send a few copies of the photo essay! They arrived in the mail over the weekend. I was a little disappointed to see some of a few of my favorite shots from the project not included but I really loved the ones Stephanie chose and how the pages were laid out. I am glad it turned out so wonderful.

Last Wednesday my good friend Jennifer and I met up in Evanston to take some promo photos for her website and upcoming CD, “Bodies of Water.” It went really well: our friend Alice helped out by being light stand, there was a live band playing at the same time at the shoot (they were “so rock and roll”), and we grabbed some dinner afterward. Thanks Jennifer! Check out her amazing music here.
Photo notes:
Setup was simple: lightstand, 580exII, shoot-thru umbrella, Pocketwizards. I could have really used a fill, but don’t have one right now (I want either another speedlite or a B800 and vagabond). Could also use a reflector.. emm…

And lastly, here’s a CD cover I was playing around with. Jennifer already has cover art for “Bodies of Water” (which I am really excited to see). Consider it “fan art.”

Yesterday I went to the Korean Festival in Chicago to see my friend Yoo Soo and his band, The Hemmingbirds, play. Here’s some shots of him and some people at K-Fest. I might go again today to check out the wrestling competition, so part II possibly on the way.
